Choosing A Casket For Cremation: Which Options Are Available?

Derek Murphy

When planning a funeral for a loved one who has chosen cremation, you have several options for how to plan the funeral service. You can choose to have the service after the cremation has been performed and place the urn on a pedestal during the funeral. You can also choose to have the viewing and funeral service before the cremation. If you chose this option, you'll need a casket. There are several different casket styles to choose from. Here are just some to consider.

Casket Rental

Some funeral homes offer rental caskets, which you simply pay to use for the day. They come with disposable liners, so your loved one has a fresh place to lie in rest during the service. This option is ideal if you want the look of a traditional casket but don't want to pay the full cost of one. If your funeral director does not have a design you like, you may be able to arrange for him or her to purchase a new rental that can be added to the funeral home's inventory. You'll be able to rent it for the service, and the funeral home can then offer it to future clients as well.

Cardboard Caskets

Cardboard caskets can offer a beautiful look, and they can be used in the cremation process. They come in a variety of colors and styles, and they feature the same type of casket liners you see on traditional caskets. They can be lined with cloth for a more finished look as well. Cardboard caskets typically have a simple design, and they are great for people who don't want a lot of frill and fuss at their funeral.

Fiberboard Caskets

Fiberboard caskets look similar to traditional caskets, but they are made for use in the crematory. They can be found in a number of wood finishes, and they feature crepe linings, which may be removed before the cremation process begins. For more upscale caskets, you can opt for a model that features a velvet interior. Fiberboard caskets can be simple or ornate, giving you a bit of freedom to choose the design that best reflects your loved one's sense of style. Your funeral director can help you to select a cremation casket, or if you choose to rent, show you the options available for a temporary casket. He or she may have a selection to view in a showroom within the funeral home, or he can help you browse online stores or traditional catalogs to find the right casket for your loved one.
