Unique Casket Ideas For The Outdoorsman's Funeral

Derek Murphy

If you are planning the funeral of a loved outdoorsman, you can honor his life and interests by choosing a casket that reflects his personality and preferences. Casket designs can vary, but here are some interesting and unique casket ideas to consider:

1. The Mossy Oak.

Instead of lining the casket with typical satin, choose a casket that is lined with an authentic camouflage pattern. You can even customize the pattern based on the time of year of the funeral. Snow and branch camouflage would be great for winter, while a brighter green and brown mixture would be ideal for a later summer funeral. To make the casket even more original, the wooden exterior could be carved with dear, bears, and moose for a true hunting theme.

2. The Fish.

If your loved one enjoyed fishing, why not choose casket that actually looks like a fish? Some wooden caskets come carved in the shape of familiar sporting fishes like trout, salmon, bass, and pike. If that is a little too out there for you, you can customize a regular casket with photos of fishing exploits from your loved one's life. Consider inscribing the casket with a hopeful phrase, like "Gone Fishing," as reminder that your loved one is in the ultimate better place.

3. The All-Natural

One of the passions of true outdoorsmen is working with the environment to control needed animal populations and to conserve forests and wildlife. You can homage to that noble goal by choosing a biodegradable casket that will truly allow your loved one to give back to his environment. In order to use a grass or pine box casket, look for a green cemetery that does not use cement lined graves. You can personalize these simple caskets by adding photographs that mark significant life events or by ordering outdoor-inspired floral arrangements made with foliage and common grasses from the hunting grounds.

4. The Canoe.

If your outdoorsman spent more time on the water than off it, a canoe or row boat casket would be a thoughtful choice. The caskets are usually thoughtfully carved from beautiful wood, but they come with a fitted lid that makes the "canoe" better for funeral services. If possible, you could even place the canoe casket in a local water body during the wake, before transporting the body to the cemetery.
