When you're thinking of burial options for a loved one, a mausoleum may not be the first thing that comes to mind. But there are several advantages of a mausoleum burial that make it worth considering. Here are some things to think about when deciding if a mausoleum burial is right for you or your loved one. 

An Above-Ground Burial

For those who feel uncomfortable with the idea of being buried under ground, the mausoleum can be a much more manageable choice. The loved one's remains will be stored in a monument that sits on the cemetery property. 

The Cost Is Similar to Other Burial Types

Many people avoid mausoleums out of fear that the costs will be high. However, it's often a similar cost to that of a traditional underground burial. When you consider the costs of digging the cemetery plot and lowering a casket into the plot, the cost of a physical mausoleum is comparable. Be sure to ask your funeral director about the most affordable mausoleum options. 

Cremation and Casket Burial Are Both Possible

A mausoleum can accommodate both a casket and an urn. The urn mausoleum may be smaller, but you can also opt for the larger monument if you wish. 

You May or May Not Be Able to Visit

In some cases, you may not be able to visit the inside of the mausoleum after the ceremony. This is because the cemetery might seal the door of the mausoleum in order to preserve the remains and prevent damage to the mausoleum. However, there are options if you wish to be able to visit the remains inside the mausoleum or create a memorial there. One option is to have a larger crypt-style mausoleum to house the remains. 

You Can Keep the Family Together

If you opt for a larger mausoleum, you can use it to house multiple family members in one space. This will make it easy for family and friends to come and pay respects to multiple family members at once. If this is your intention, you should speak with a funeral director to make sure that you choose the right mausoleum from the start and coordinate with your cemetery director to make sure they can accommodate multiple burials.
