Three Tips For Planning Your Cremation

Derek Murphy

When you pass away, it will be hard for your family to make all of the decisions that come with planning a funeral through their grieving. If you want to take some of the pressure to plan your funeral off of your family, consider preplanning it. Use the guide below to learn how to properly for your cremation before you actually pass away.

Plan a Wake

You want for your family and friends to be able to say goodbye to you. You can rent a coffin from the funeral home where you plan to hold your funeral to use during the wake. This will allow everyone to physically see you before you are cremated.

Consider if You Want Your Ashes to be Stored

After you are cremated, your ashes can be saved and stored forever, if you would like. You can have them placed in an urn, placed in jewelry for your friends and family to wear, or even used to make a piece of artwork that can hang on the wall of someone's home. Many people assume that only one option is available when they are cremated. That is not the case at all though. You can have your ashes divided and used however you choose. Be sure to be very specific when indicating how you want your ashes to be stored though.

Consider Where You Want Your Ashes Spread

If you want some of your ashes to be spread somewhere that is special to you, be sure to indicate it. You also may want to take the time to get a permit to spread your ashes in the location where you want them to be spread. Some jurisdictions have restrictions as to where human ashes can be spread because it may be considered a health hazard. Getting a permit will ensure that your family is able to honor your wishes without getting into any trouble.

You can meet with the funeral director and pay for all of the services and rental fees for your funeral in advance. This will take some of the financial burden off of your family, as well. Be sure to have a will written that specifies all of the things that you want to happen when you pass away to ensure that no one can claim that you wanted something done with your remains that you do not want to have done with them. A will is legally binding and will ensure everything goes exactly how you want it to go.
